Weekly Rewind: Piling on the pressure

BTB and Blizzard are neck-and-neck in the Men’s Division as the latter pull away in the women’s competition.

Tight at the top

There were wins for the top two sides in the Men’s Division on May 9, as Edmonton BTB and Calgary Blizzard continued their unbeaten starts to the season.

For the Blizzard, they won 2-0 at home against Calgary Foothills. Efe Udolu-Joshua opened the scoring within five minutes, and William Omoreniye found the net in the 63rd minute to secure the points against a nine-men Foothills team after two red cards.

For BTB, they won 3-0 on the road against St Albert Impact to keep it close at the summit of the standings. Jack Ferraro fired the visitors ahead in the 11th minute, before Frankroy Cain and Jackson Belbin put the icing on the cake.

To round up another weekend of Men’s Division action, Calgary Rangers enjoyed a 2-0 away win at Edmonton Scottish thanks to goals from Josh Flaksman and Finn Marshal. The visitors did have a man sent off, though, with Hyunsoo Ryu handed a second yellow card.

More Blizzard momentum

Calgary Blizzard’s women ensured it was a perfect day for the club when they beat Foothills 1-0 on Friday. An Addison White goal in the 51st minute ensured the home side took all three points and moved to the top of the standings with two wins and a tie so far. For Foothills, that was their first defeat since their 3-0 win on the opening day.

Elsewhere, Edmonton Scottish enjoyed a convincing 5-2 home win against Calgary Rangers to go second. The visitors took the lead twice through Lucy Mundy and Catriona McFadden, but a Jyla Erandio brace alongside goals from Jenna Steacy, Neala Peters, and Emma Colbert gave the hosts maximum points.

Matchweek Three also featured St Albert Impact’s 2-1 win against Edmonton BTB. Samantha Bouchard equalized after Lauren Lonsberry’s opener, but Sophie Lavallee won the game in the fifth minute of injury time to give the hosts all three points.

Tuesday action

The matchweek hasn’t finished just yet, with Callies United taking on the Calgary Villains tonight. Both clubs are looking for their first win in the Men’s Division, with the Villains aiming to build on their three points in the women’s competition.
