Weekly Rewind: Late drama and surprising scorelines

There were several eye-catching matches in Matchweek Five with the Villains, Rangers, and Impact securing crucial points.

Late goals and opportunities taken

The lead at the top of the Women’s Division changed hands on Friday, as an all-Calgary affair ended in an unexpected result.

Calgary Blizzard will be frustrated with how the weekend went, following their 2-1 defeat at home to bottom-side Calgary Rangers. The visitors took a 2-0 lead into the last 40 minutes of the game after goals from Isabella Dipalma and Layla Tarraf, and Aislin Phillips’ 85th-minute penalty couldn’t spark a comeback as the Rangers held on for their first points since joining the Women’s Division.

Calgary Foothills began the day in perfect fashion when they beat Edmonton BTB 2-0 to move into first place. First-half goals from Abby Steen and Avril Jamieson ensured the home side took all three points and leapfrogged the Blizzard.

The Foothills then defeated the Rangers 6-0 on Tuesday, extending their gap at the top in style. Five different scorers, including a late Jamieson brace, increased the Foothills’ lead to five points.

Calgary Villains enjoyed their second win of 2025 with a 3-2 away victory at Edmonton Scottish. The visitors had lost three matches in a row, and it looked like a fourth was coming when Emma Colbert put the hosts 2-0 up. Isabelle Lachance got one back in first-half stoppage time, and goals from Jenna Dowson and Ella Tait stole the points in the final moments of the match.

Gap closed

The battle at the top of the Men’s Division is becoming more exciting as the gap closed between first and second in the standings.

Although they remain at the summit, Edmonton BTB will be looking over their shoulders at the chasing pack following their result. With a 1-1 tie away at Calgary Foothills, Amadou Bayo’s opener for Foothills being cancelled out by Jackson Belbin, BTB missed the chance to maintain a strong lead.

Behind them, title-chasing Calgary Blizzard made the most of their opportunity to close the gap by beating Calgary Rangers 2-0. The Blizzard have moved just one point off top with a game in hand, thanks to goals from Marco Plenzik and Efe Udolu-Joshua.

The Rangers had a second chance for three points on Tuesday and beat the Foothills 2-0. Goals from Jonathan Walter and Finn Marshall increased their points tally to double digits.

There was also a win for Edmonton Scottish, who claimed their first victory of 2025 with a 3-0 home result against bottom side Calgary Villains. The hosts took the lead after 15 minutes through Yanive Solomon and never looked back. Habib Assem doubled their advantage before completing his brace just after half-time.

St Albert Impact rescued a late point in a 1-1 tie with Cavalry U21. The hosts took the lead through Thomas Stuber, but Noah Lechelt’s 88th-minute penalty ensured it finished level.
