Weekly Rewind: Back with a bang
League1 Alberta’s first full matchweek of 2025 saw plenty of goals and drama across the two divisions.

Blizzard hold defending champs
Calgary Blizzard opened the scoring early against defending Men’s Division champions Edmonton Scottish through Philip Masri. The Scottish equalized in the 32nd minute thanks to a Jacob Hunter goal and neither side could find the all-important winner.
There were more goals in Edmonton BTB’s dramatic 5-3 win at Calgary Villains. The away side raced into an early lead through Frankroy Cain, before Tao Hein doubled their lead. Hein then went from hero to zero after scoring an own goal, but he more than made up for it later when he secured his brace.
The Blizzard and the Villains both played again on Monday night, with the former running out 6-1 victors, which included a Joey Plenzik double.
There were also wins for Cavalry U21 and Calgary Foothills men’s sides. Cavalry took all three points on the road against St Albert Impact, and Foothills claimed a convincing 4-1 win against Callies United which involved an Amadou Bayo brace.
Huge impact from St Albert
A big victory in the Women’s Division on Friday was St Albert Impact’s 10-0 win over Calgary Wild U21 who are a friendly team in League1 Alberta this year, meaning their matches will not count towards the Women’s Division standings.
It was a dominant 90 minutes from the hosts, which saw Sariyah Bailey score four, a Lauren Lonsberry brace, and goals from Ella Fownes, Raeghan McCarthy, Olivia Chu, and McKenna Leslie.
There was more entertainment in Calgary when the Villains won 4-3 against Edmonton BTB. The away side took two first-half leads through Gabrielle Linford and Haden Thomas, but Caitlynd McRoberts-Barry and Reid Garvey equalized on two separate occasions. Thomas’ second that put BTB 3-2 up was nullified by Cheyenne Lehmann and Isabelle Lachance.
The Foothills took maximum points on their travels when they won 3-0 against Callies United. An Avril Jamieson brace was topped off by Ashlynn Walia’s goal to put the icing on the cake with 19 minutes to play.
Elsewhere, Edmonton Scottish and Calgary Blizzard tied in a 0-0 stalemate as both teams started the season with a clean sheet. The Blizzard then returned to action on Monday with a 4-1 victory against the Villains with Grace Moore securing a brace.
