Weekly Preview: Opportunities arise

With the Women’s Division leaders out of action this week, it’s time for potential title-chasers to make the most of their games in hand.

Foothills face competition

With Calgary Foothills having a week off, there is the opportunity for Women’s Division sides with games in hand to put some pressure on the leading team.

Second-place Calgary Blizzard are their closest challengers and can move within two points of the summit with a win against Edmonton Scottish. The Blizzard have seven points from a possible 12 and will be hoping to claim maximum points against a side who have struggled in this campaign.

St Albert Impact have only played two games so far this season, but with wins in each of those, they have set themselves up to head to the top if they win their games in hand. The first of these comes this weekend when they face Calgary Rangers, who sit at the bottom of the standings but could make it two wins from three on Friday.

The teams sitting in fourth and fifth also face off, with Callies United on the road to play Calgary Villains. The visitors have two wins and a loss from their three matches so far but could propel themselves into the top two if results go their way. For the Villains, they will be looking to find consistent form after six points from five matches.

Callies are then back in action on Tuesday when they hit the road once again to face the Rangers, and maximum points from their two matches would put them level on points with the Foothills after the same number of games.

Still going strong

Men’s Division leaders Edmonton BTB continue their unbeaten start to the season this weekend when they visit Cavalry U21. The visitors sit on 11 points after five games, but have their eyes over their shoulders at Calgary Blizzard, who are one point behind with a game in hand. Cavalry U21 have had a mixed start to 2025 so far, with one win, one tie, and two losses.

The Blizzard can pile the pressure on at the summit when they play Edmonton Scottish at Shane Homes West Soccer Dome. With a game in hand and a fixture against an out-of-sorts Scottish side, they have an opportunity to remain hot on the heels of BTB above them and potentially take the lead in the standings.

Elsewhere, Calgary Rangers, who sit level on points with the Blizzard, can strengthen their spot as title challengers with a good result at St Albert Impact. The hosts have struggled at the beginning of 2025, sitting second-bottom with four points.

Calgary Villains host Callies United as they look to claim their first points of the season. The travelling side will be no easy task, however, as they have two wins from just three games played so far in 2025.

It’s also the first of two opportunities for Callies to pick up more points this matchweek, because they visit the Rangers in the upcoming Tuesday-night game.
