Weekend Preview: Full night of soccer
It’s a full night of League1 Alberta action with four matches across both divisions and another on Monday.

Title challengers clash
It is a busy Friday in both the Men’s and Women’s Divisions, with a number of sides looking to prove they are worthy of silverware this year.
In the Men’s Division, the action begins with defending champions Edmonton Scottish hosting last year’s third-place team, Calgary Blizzard, who were just two points behind the eventual champions. The Scottish are coming into this one off the back of midweek TELUS Canadian Championship action, while the Blizzard will be fresh off the blocks.
For the women’s Blizzard side, they begin their title defence against an Edmonton Scottish side that came sixth out of seven teams last year.
A point to prove
St Albert Impact are the hosts for their opening Men’s Division fixture against Cavalry U21. The two sides finished side-by-side in 2024, with St Albert in fourth and six points ahead of this weekend’s visitors. The home side held the upper hand in head-to-heads last season, winning 4-1 at home and tying 2-2 away.
In the Women’s Division, St Albert’s aim will be to improve on a disappointing 2024 that saw them finish bottom. They face Calgary Wild U21, who have recently joined the league after taking over management of ASA High Performance.
Elsewhere in the men’s league, Calgary Foothills are in action when they travel to Callies United. The visitors will want to start the year with maximum points following last season’s second-place finish, which was only due to a head-to-head record against Edmonton Scottish.
In the women’s fixture, Callies’ women are aiming to start the year with a win after they narrowly missed out on the league title last year, finishing five points behind the Blizzard.
The final match on Friday sees Calgary Villains host Edmonton BTB in both leagues. While the Villains are making their League1 Alberta debut, BTB’s women started 2025 with a 3-0 win against Calgary Rangers, so will be looking to continue their perfect start.
In the Men’s Division, BTB began the year with a 1-1 tie, but continuing an unbeaten start will be no easy feat against a side looking to make their mark in a new competition.
Monday night matchup
The matchweek continues on Monday with the Blizzard and the Villains back in action for the second time in four days. Will either team take advantage of the back-to-back fixtures and take an early lead in the divisions?
