Weekly Rewind: Entertainment factor

There were lots of goals in the Men’s Division this week, while the Women’s Division leaders took another step towards glory.

Goals galore

There were no complaints on Friday in the Men’s Division as far as entertainment was concerned with goals flying in left, right, and centre.

The action began in Calgary when the Rangers enjoyed a 5-2 win over Cavalry U21. The hosts went into this game still in the hunt for top spot in the standings and did all they could to keep the pressure on. Kwasi Oteng-Frimpong, Josh Flaksman, Bwidju Mutongolo, Abel Nesibu, and Finn Marshall all scored to move Calgary to within two points of first place.

BTB had the opportunity to maintain a four-point gap at the summit when they played Calgary Blizzard, but they could only manage a tie at the Soccer Centre Dome. The result could have been a lot worse, though, as the visitors found themselves 3-0 down after 54 minutes. Tao Hein’s goal and a Jack Ferraro brace late on saved a point.

There was another entertaining match on Friday, when Edmonton Scottish won 4-3 at Callies United. The away side were 4-0 up with 13 minutes remaining and survived a late scare when the hosts scored three goals between the 85th minute and four minutes into injury time. The Scottish held on, though, to move level on points with third place.

There was one match on Saturday, where St Albert Impact claimed their fourth win of 2025 by beating Calgary Foothills 1-0. The game looked to be ending level, but Rodane Cato scored on 90+4 to steal all three points as St Albert leapfrogged their opponents.

Staying ahead

There were two games on Friday in the Women’s Division, but the headline from the weekend came from St Albert as Calgary Foothills claimed a huge three points.

The visitors were 2-0 up just before the hour mark after Kendall Showers and Isabel Monck scored, before Raeghan McCarthy got one back for the hosts. Avril Jamieson restored Foothills’ two-goal lead with eight minutes remaining, but Adalyn Fairweather ensured it was not to be a simple end to the game. The visitors held on, though, to stay top.

The day before, Callies United enjoyed their Friday with a 5-1 win against Edmonton Scottish at Shane Homes West Soccer Dome. Emma Nicholson scored a brace alongside goals from Juli Sorochan, Amelia Iwanicki, and Allison Remington, to move the hosts level on points with Edmonton BTB in fourth.

Calgary Blizzard failed to move closer to top spot after tying 1-1 with BTB. The hosts could have gone into Saturday at the summit but had to equalize late to rescue a single point.
